Primary Purpose:

This position is based primarily on the Madras campus of Central Oregon Community College and provides instruction to students in developmental literacy, corequisite, and college-level composition courses, directs student discussion, and evaluates student performance in the classroom. In addition, this position develops curriculum, assesses student learning, and provides student advising. This position will also have the opportunity to teach select literature classes 1 - 3 times per academic year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide instruction primarily in person on the Madras and Prineville campuses, using established course outcomes. This includes lecturing and guiding in-class writing activities and providing individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day (including early morning), evening, or weekend and could include classes taught on either of the two other campuses COCC serves (Redmond and Bend), and teaching composition and corequisites on Zoom. Instructor may have the opportunity to teach asynchronous online composition courses 1 - 3 times each academic year.
Provide student advising and assistance in areas of course selection, career planning, job placement and employment follow-up.
Hold at least five scheduled office hours per week for student help sessions and program assistance.
Utilize College tools and resources, including the Learning Management System and Disability Services software, to support teaching activities as appropriate.
Participate in department meetings, curriculum revision, course assessment, program assessment, and program review.
Engage in regular professional growth activities, remain current in the field, and maintain current credentials or licensures as required by the program.
Contribute to shaping the culture and identity of the Madras campus.
Perform other essential job functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Thorough knowledge in the field of Developmental Literacy based on education and/or experience in the field, as well as demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
Thorough knowledge in the field of composition based on education and/or experience in the field, as well as demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
Thorough knowledge in a literature subfield based on education and/or experience in the field, as well as demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
Ability to adapt and use a variety of teaching and assessment techniques including the use of technology to enhance student success.
Ability to observe, direct, and oversee students ensuring safety in the classroom or laboratory.
Ability to work with and present various curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office suite: various course management systems; technology to teach traditional, hybrid, or online courses; and other technology used in the instruction setting.
Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members.

Willingness to travel and or teach at various hours and campus locations, as required.
Ability to foster a collaborative atmosphere among students and the willingness to work as a member of a team with faculty.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

Masters degree in English, Developmental Literacy, Adult Education, Rhetoric and Composition, or other relevant field from an accredited institution; or a minimum of 30 quarter hours (20 semester hours) of graduate credit in academic courses in the field of the primary teaching assignment.

Experience:

One year of successful college teaching experience in composition, developmental writing, and corequisites or evidence for the potential for excellence in teaching.
One year of successful college teaching experience in a sub field of literature.

Preferred Qualifications:

At least 2 years of successful college teaching experience in developmental literacy, corequisites, and college-level composition courses.
At least 2 years of successful college teaching experience in a sub field of literature.
Experience in or ability to teach technical writing.
