Job Description
The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Veterinary Nurse Supervisor, Diagnostic Imaging, located within the Small Animal Sciences department. The primary purpose of this position is to supervise staff and provide advanced nursing care by performing complex radiographic, CT, and nuclear medicine imaging procedures. Incumbent demonstrates leadership, administers medicine and treatments, and provides a high level of input on management of patient care. Position supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents in proper radiographic imaging and radiation safety. Oversees the services medical equipment and supplies maintenance. Is cross-trained in multiple areas; CT, radiographs, ultrasound, large animal and small animal. Hires employees, initiates corrective action, and conducts performance evaluations. Oversees day-to-day work, scheduling staff, and approving time entry and leave requests. Attends supervisory specific training and meetings.


Responsibilities
  • Supervises Diagnostic Imaging staff
    • Hires employees, initiates corrective action, and conducts performance evaluations.
    • Oversees day-to-day work, scheduling staff, and approving time entry and leave requests.
    • Develops and provides on-boarding materials, employee development (skills and knowledge related to radiology) as well as professional development training including but not limited to (conflict resolution, feedback training, leadership, etc).
    • Attends supervisory specific training and meetings.
    • Assists in maintaining equipment, budget, and providing support to the section leader.
  • Provides advanced nursing care in Diagnostic Imaging
    • Manages assigned modality by organizing the daily work schedule, preparing patients for procedures, and obtaining high quality studies on both small and large animals with minimal supervision.
    • Performs quality control equipment and schedules equipment preventative maintenance and repairs as needed.
    • Produces high quality radiographic studies on multiple species of animals.
    • Teaches veterinary, veterinary technician students, and house officers proper positioning as well as machine settings for radiographic.
    • Teaches and promotes radiation safety procedures to all individuals.
    • Sedates and monitors animals undergoing radiographic procedures.
    • Trains technicians and students on proper application of techniques and modalities.
  • Oversees the dosimeter program of employees and students for both small and large animal departments
    • Ensures that dosimeters are ordered for all employees and students who are required to work around X-ray producing equipment.
    • Oversees and maintains communication with the UT Radiation Safety Department concerning radiation safety training for those who are assigned radiation dosimetry.
    • Communicates with assigned dosimeter holders when dosimeters are due
    • Places current dosimeters on boards and return used dosimeters to radiation safety on time.
  • Performs on-call duties and other duties as assigned by supervisor, department head, and director of veterinary nursing.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)- accredited program in Veterinary Technology with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree.
  • Must hold a Veterinary Technician license and must obtain a license to practice in Tennessee within first year of employment.
  • 3 years of relevant experience in a veterinary medical center or in a private/specialty veterinary practice.
  • Must have supervisory/leadership experience (examples include serving as acting supervisor during supervisor's absence, completion of leadership courses, and serving as head of project or project coordinator).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 6 years of relevant experience in a veterinary medical center or 7 years in a private/specialty veterinary practice.
  • 3 years of internal, relevant experience as a Senior Veterinary Nurse at UTCVM.
  • Veterinary Technician Specialty Certification.

The Veterinary Medical Center is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. Occasional weekend, evening, or holiday work may be required of this position.

Compensation and Benefits:
  • UT market range: MR07
  • Anticipated hiring range: $59,302.40 to $66,866.04, plus on-call and shift differential pay if applicable
